Certified Cleaned by SERVPRO of Monterey Park: Disinfecting Workplaces, Offices, and Facilities

Cleaning and Disinfecting a customer's home in Monterey Park, CA
During an unprecedented global public health issue, “disinfecting” means more than singing a 20-second tune in your head while washing your hands. With coronavirus affecting our everyday lives in some way, deep cleaning is now incorporated into our routines as part of the new normal.
This especially holds true for corporate and commercial business owners and property managers who are stepping up their sanitizing game to institute and maintain healthy and safe work environments. Proper cleaning and disinfection routines can significantly reduce or eliminate coronavirus on surfaces and objects in workplaces, offices and facilities.
Commercial cleaning = Peace of mind
While the majority of the Monterey Park area businesses haven’t been affected by coronavirus contamination, owners are using this time to stay proactive through commercial cleaning. With many employees now working from home and essential facilities operating with minimal staff, it’s a convenient opportunity for deep cleaning.
Knowing a workspace or business has followed exposure and cleaning procedure guidelines provides peace of mind for employers, employees, vendors, clients and customers. They can feel confident the environment was thoroughly and professionally cleaned according to Centers for Disease Controls (CDC) and local authorities.
Examples of high-touch surfaces
In the workplace, frequently touched surfaces are tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks, fixtures and electronics (phone receivers and keypads, computers, keyboards, tablets, touch screens, kiosks and remote controls).
Other commercial spaces may include sales counters, water fountains, soda and snack machines, kitchens, break rooms and food areas, bathrooms, meeting rooms and classrooms, shelving and racks, carpets, rugs and drapes, furnaces and air conditioners, stair and escalator handrails, elevators, and playground or fitness equipment.
How long does coronavirus stay on surfaces?
While the World Health Organization doesn’t know how long COVID-19 survives on surfaces as an infection threat, it appears to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest coronaviruses may last on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days, depending on the surface type and the environment’s temperature and humidity level.
Products to eliminate germs and viruses
Several chemical germicides are effective when used in proper concentration for a sufficient length of time, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergents (soap), iodine-based antiseptics and alcohols. The Environmental Protection Agency provides a helpful list of registered disinfectants and products for use against contagious disease.
If you don’t have access to a disinfectant product, you can clean with a chlorine bleach solution. For floors and more substantial surface cleaning, use five tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water. For spray bottle applications, mix four teaspoons of bleach per quart of water. You can also use any alcohol solution that has at least 70% alcohol.
Techniques for cleaning and disinfecting workplace surfaces
CDC offers these everyday steps for cleaning and disinfecting.
- Always wear gloves to protect your hands from harsh chemicals.
- Never mix cleaning products.
- Always clean with a detergent or soap and water solution before disinfecting. This removes particles on surfaces, which reduces the viral load before disinfection begins. It allows the disinfectant to be more effective against the remaining virus.
- To properly disinfect using Clorox or Lysol wipes, be sure to clean only one item at a time. To sanitize the surface, let it remain visibly wet for 10 seconds. Sanitizing reduces germs to a generally safe level. To disinfect, use enough wipes to keep the surface wet for four minutes, which will kill all surface germs.
- Always follow the directions on disinfectant products by letting the liquid remain on the surface while it does its cleaning job. If you spray cleaner on a surface, then immediately wipe it off with a dry paper towel, it reduces its germ-killing effectiveness.
- For homemade chlorine bleach solutions, use a cloth to apply it to surfaces and let it stand for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing with clean water.
- When cleaning soft surfaces, such as carpet, rugs and drapes, use soap and water or safe-to-use cleaners. If possible, launder the items according to the manufacturer’s instructions (using the warmest appropriate water setting) and let the pieces dry completely.
Commercial Cleaning Services
SERVPRO of Monterey Park is a member of the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the certifying body for the cleaning and restoration industry. We adhere to CDC and local authority guidelines related to COVID-19 exposure and cleaning procedures. Our primary cleaning technique includes hand wiping surfaces and fogging, a process that uses an ultra-low volume or electrostatic sprayer to apply disinfectant to surfaces.
We focus on three levels of disinfecting: proactive, high-touch and enhanced or reactive cleaning. Proactive cleaning measures, such as a single wipe of high-touch surfaces and fogging applications, are suitable for facilities without any known cases of COVID-19 exposure. A workplace or facility that may have been exposed through an employee or vendor will require multiple wipes of high-touch surface areas and fogging.
Reactive cleaning
When someone known to have a contagious disease has been exposed to the workplace or facility, we recommend enhanced or reactive cleaning. In these cases, we customize services based on the specific needs of a facility. And, we may use a cleaning protocol developed by a third-party industrial hygienist.
Additionally, the CDC recommends opening windows and doors to increase air circulation and closing off all areas used by the infected person. Wait 24 hours (or as long as possible), then clean and disinfect offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment and any other areas the infected person may have used.

Flooded bathroom with contaminated water caused by sewer backup in a Monterey Park home
When flooding occurs in your Monterey Park, CA home, facing the cleanup process can be unsettling. Different types of floods may require different cleaning strategies. When a backed-up sewer causes a flood at your home, you may have to call in professional cleanup and restoration experts to handle the situation safely, and knowing what to expect when they arrive can help you feel more comfortable about the results.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup
Contaminated water in your home is an emergency. It should be removed from the home as fast as possible by a company trained by the best industry standards. Certified water damage technicians will use specialized equipment to extract the water, then dry out the area with powerful fans and ventilation. All areas and contents affected by the flood waters will need to be cleaned and sanitized with approved cleaning agents. Some items might need to be destroyed. The recovery process includes the elimination of odors from the home.

The Path of Mold Damage Recovery for Monterey Park Homes
4/5/2023 (Permalink)
SERVPRO is Faster To Any Size Disaster to remediate mold damage in Monterey Park.
Cleaning Up Mold Damage Fast for Homes
Mold can be one of the most threatening situations a home faces because many property owners do not recognize the issue until it is widespread and hazardous. Multiple accredited restoration professionals are needed to help return your home to its original condition, and we have technicians certified through the IICRC in the following:
With how quickly Monterey Park mold damage can develop and spread through a structure, these experienced professionals must move quickly to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, which shows with our fast rollout of the Green Fleet after mold threats.
Evaluating the Home's Condition
Mold inspections are an essential part of the remediation process because it allows our SERVPRO team to appreciate the scope of the work to come. Evaluating the home's condition shows where pressing concerns exist and how to best help when remediation gets underway.
Effective Remediation Is a Matter of Approach
SERVPRO uses several approaches for mold remediation and cleanup. Some of the key methods to get your home to preloss condition include:
Surface cleaning is where much of the remediation work begins in homes and businesses, as this is the least invasive and intrusive solution. Sporicidal agents can destroy surface mold growth and inhibit the further development on sensitive construction materials.
Wood framing and similar construction elements can benefit from sanding practices to remove mold infestations. This mold damage can be regulated so that these materials can be removed.
Abrasives like sodium bicarbonate are mild bases, making them excellent for cleaning and surface organism removal without destroying the underlying substrate hosting the spores.
The most direct and permanent measure of mold remediation is removing the affected material entirely. When the construction element hosting the colony is damaged beyond repair, this eliminates the mold and prevents further damage
Will This Threat Go Away Naturally?
It is important to note that mold is unlikely to go away on its own. The production and spread of active organisms become an increasingly worse condition for the property, particularly when the means of providing moisture to the environment is not rectified. Professional remediation is exclusively designed to remove active colonization of mold organisms and prevent recurrences. Our SERVPRO team's experience helps you get back to your normal house conditions fast with effective microbial removal and post-mold cleanup.
Eliminating Post-Mold Odors
Malodors are an issue with mold development from the first onset of mold damage in your home or business. In many ways, a musty smell can indicate colonization even before physical signs appear on surfaces in the immediate area. This same sensory obstacle remains even after much of the remediation process completes. We have multiple deodorization practices and products to neutralize harsh and offensive smells tied to microbial development. Fogging is among the most effective and versatile, allowing vapor to penetrate trapped odors in building materials and open area malodors.
Mold Damage Repairs
Repairs are another way our professionals must address the damage that mold can do to a property. Often, controlled demolition is one of the most effective and direct means of eliminating heavily infested hosting materials, but that leaves build-back services necessary to return your home to preloss condition. Our general contractor license allows us to complete the required reconstruction and rebuilding to restore comfortable living conditions and make it "Like it never even happened."
Monterey Park mold damage should be handled quickly to prevent the situation from getting more out of control. With experienced and knowledgeable remediation specialists from our SERVPRO of Monterey Park team, the help you need is a phone call away at (626) 656-6577.
Getting Monterey Park Water Damage Cleanup Started Quickly

water damage in Monterey Park homes.
The Steps of Successful Water Damage Recovery
Water disasters and emergencies make up most of the house service calls our technicians respond to throughout the year. Anticipating these calls helps us stay alert for needed extraction, drying, and surface cleaning that might result from unexpected plumbing issues or flooding.
Monterey Park water damage cleanup should begin as soon as possible. Our professionals have a wealth of vehicles and restoration equipment that SERVPRO can use to improve conditions in your home quickly after disasters.
What Emergency Repairs Help?
Damages to your home can only worsen the longer property owners wait for experienced help to arrive. With the fast response of SERVPRO professionals 24/7, we can get vital emergency repairs underway to keep the situation from worsening and prevent larger-scale tear-out and reconstruction of the utilities and the structural systems within the residence. Emergency repairs can include demolition, eliminating sagging materials, and patching up damage to the plumbing network.
Getting Water Removal Services Underway
One of the earliest actions our professionals can take is to remove water damage with extraction devices. Water removal is critical in protecting flooring and other exposed materials, as pooling is a pressing issue that must get addressed immediately to preserve installed building materials and contents. Some of the tools used to complete this crucial stage of mitigation include:
- Electric submersible pumps
- Trash pumps
- Wet vacuums
- Truck-mount extractors
Standard Instruments for Thorough Drying
Drying is a universal need of all restoration plans that our SERVPRO team creates after losses from leaks, flooding, and other water threats. Using a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers, we can manage moisture and wet surfaces to protect installed building materials however possible.
Unique Drying Tools We Use
Sometimes more than the basic drying and restoration tools are needed to manage where the water damage has moved. Absorption and moisture migration are significant threats to structural elements, so specialty tools might be required to help like:
- Carpet Wands – Wet vacuums are among the most versatile restoration equipment to dry the home, including using carpet wands that provide focused extraction from carpets and padding.
- Weighted Roving Extractors – Using the weight of the technician for effectiveness, roving extractors press carpets and padding against the subflooring materials to force moisture to the surface for collection.
- Drying Mats – Large mats can get placed on wood plank flooring to draw out moisture through capillary suction.
Protecting Your Home from Secondary Damage
Water damage is often more than removing moisture from building materials and regulating humidity in the environment. Experienced professionals on our team must also address the potential for mold development in these moist conditions. Moisture and damp materials create a favorable environment for mold and microbial growth and spread. Wet, porous elements are excellent hosts for aggressive mold spores, allowing for a rapid and deep infestation that requires direct remediation actions to resolve. Regulating moisture and damp pockets helps to limit the possibilities of fungal colonization
When Are Repairs Needed?
Repairs and reconstruction are likely part of the restoration solution if your property suffers flooding and burst pipe damage. With an experienced roster of specialists under a general contractor license, we can complete these needed build-back services seamlessly after the restoration ends. Fast transitions between recovery phases help homeowners to get back to their properties more quickly following a disaster. The process often begins with material removal and controlled demolition, but can continue through utility repairs, rebuilding, and new construction needs.
Monterey Park water damage can devastate your home, making it vital for our professionals to respond quickly for mitigation and restoration services. You can count on our experienced SERVPRO of Monterey Park professionals to help 24/7 when you call (626) 656-6577.
The Primary Focuses of Monterey Park Fire Damage Cleanup
4/5/2023 (Permalink)
Fire damage cleanup and restoration in Monterey Park include soot removal and improving indoor air quality.
The Phases of Fire Damage Recovery
There are multiple phases and components to local homes' average fire restoration process. From the time that our professionals arrive after the first responders clear the structure for entry, each of these specific phases plays a part in helping life get back to normal:
- Emergency Services
- Mitigating Loss
- Cleaning Soot
- Overcoming Odors
- Reconstruction Services
Monterey Park fire damage can be one of the more frequent threats that our experienced team of restoration professionals gets asked to face. This process is often broken up into multiple steps and phases, each with an important role in restoring your household to preloss condition and comfortable living conditions.
Emergency Services That Must Happen First
While thorough inspections of the property following a disaster can help technicians on our team better understand the scope of the work to get done, some of the actions needed to protect a property and its contents precede this step. The fast response of our SERVPRO team can be vital in specific approaches like:
- Debris Removal
- Water Removal
- Temporary Construction
Starting Mitigation After a Fire
Mitigation will describe several actions needed to protect homes and businesses immediately following the thorough inspection of the property and its fire damage. Mitigating loss represents any action our SERVPRO team takes to eliminate the pressing concerns and threats to the structure. This will include several factors, such as:
- Air Quality Improvement - A critical concern is the volatile post-fire environment. Air scrubbers and HEPA filtration can help regulate airborne particulates.
- Content Relocation - Relocating contents to a safer property area can be a critical step to protect what matters most to customers.
- Controlled Demolition - Our contractors must remove damaged structural elements and destroyed materials to prevent material collapse and improve the house's air quality.
The Threats of Soot Exposure
Soot is one of the most significant obstacles professionals must face after a fire. The partial combustion of materials creates thick carbon deposits on surfaces, which must get addressed as soon as possible to protect the underlying substrates. These soils are corrosive and threatening to house occupants, so SERVPRO can use several products to help neutralize their destructive capacities and prevent worsening conditions.
The first step in removing smoke solids and soiling is dry vacuuming surfaces to remove buildup and debris. We can then evaluate the remaining fire damage for either more complex cleaning or further surface scrubbing with mechanical actions to achieve soot and smoke damage removal.
Strong Smoke Smells to Battle
Malodors are a byproduct of combustion and the presence of burned materials, so SERVPRO professionals must provide suitable solutions to neutralize these threats. Fire damage in the form of offensive smells can be managed in multiple ways, beginning with air filtration and air scrubbing to reduce airborne contaminants and particulates. The production of ozone or hydroxyl radicals can also eliminate strong odors, but these are more challenging to use in a household versus more versatile fogging solutions.
Are Repairs Necessary After a Fire?
Repairs are a very realistic expectation for fire recovery and restoration services. The combustion process can destroy many structural elements in the path of a migrating blaze, making build-back services an important component of our promise to repair it "Like it never even happened." With a general contractor license and experienced technicians on the roster, we can rapidly transition between restoration and reconstruction to help get you back to comfortable living conditions as soon as possible.
Addressing Monterey Park fire damage requires skilled professionals capable of handling several unique phases and parts of a complete restoration process. Our SERVPRO of Monterey Park team knows how to help when disasters strike. Call us today at (626) 656-6577.
How Soot and Fire Damage Impact Monterey Park Homes
4/4/2023 (Permalink)
Drywall and ceilings can attract settling soot or become a victim of smoke damage under pressure.
Materials Can Be Ruined by Fire Damage
Fire damage is destructive and overwhelming for your home. Regardless of how widespread this concern is throughout the house, our experienced professionals must work to prevent irreparable harm to construction elements, contents, and the environment of your household.
How Does Soot Impact Home Materials?
The most direct way that fire damage in Monterey Park can occur is the production of soot and smoke odors that move through the structure. We have a finite amount of time to preserve and protect your property from harm after extinguishment, so we prioritize mitigation and cleanup of areas most heavily impacted by soot soils:
- Carpeting– Carpets quickly absorb water, soot, odors, and soils after a fire. It is challenging to keep flooring materials salvageable in heavily impacted rooms. We have several carpet cleaning solutions to help, but when these are ineffective, we can pull up the surface layer to ensure the stability of the subflooring.
- Walls– Drywall on the walls and ceilings can attract settling soot or become a victim of smoke damage under pressure. Sometimes painted drywall can be cleaned and restored, but controlled demolition is another option when restoration might be too lengthy or impossible.
- Wood–Wood is challenging because the soils and the odors associated with soot and smoke damage can penetrate beyond the surface of these installations. Wood is porous, and abrasive cleaning with media blasters could be the best approach to protect the structural integrity of framing.
Controlled Demolition Beyond Cleaning
The controlled demolition process focuses on the industry knowledge of our SERVPRO team with the hands-on experience of our contractors to make real-time decisions on the salvageability of smoke-damaged materials.
When fires impact your home, you can count on SERVPRO of Monterey Park to help. Call (626) 656-6577.

Water Removal Helps Your Business Recover Faster
You may have heard of 'Category 3' water concerning flooding. Unfortunately, this type of water can end up inside your Monterey Park grocery store without any adverse weather. Instead, you might need water removal and cleanup because of a clogged toilet.
Even when water washing over your grocery store's flooring appears clean, we adhere to local water removal regulations in Monterey Park. Local businesses are subject to complicated regulations, but SERVPRO stays current with developing legal requirements. We want our services to your company to be as thorough and on-point as possible.
Because of the contaminated nature of toilet overflow, we must do the following before we can begin cleaning and drying the area:
- Enclosing the area with a negative pressure chamber,
- Removing the water, and
- Using chemical agents.
Sectioning off the bathroom where the overflow occurred includes setting up signage so patrons know not to access the area. Toilet plume aerosolizes bacteria and other microbes, making the area highly contaminated. We use a fine misting sprayer to disinfect the immediate area.
Our pumps handle contaminated water, including debris and solids. If your restroom facilities are located at the back of the store, we can use other access points to perform this task. After removing most of the water, we spray the remaining water to make it less hazardous, and then we begin removing it with handheld units.
As soon as possible, we apply cleaning agents that do two jobs – disinfect and deodorize. Because of the aerosolization factor, we disinfect the area, including wash basins and faucet fixtures, stall walls and doors, restroom entryway doors, walls inside and near the outside of the washroom, and anything else that may have become compromised.

Water Damage Repair Keeps Monterey Park Businesses from Closing

SERVPRO provides top-quality water damage restoration services in your area.
Erase Building Deficits with Water Damage Repair
It only takes a little nick in a water line to bring about a massive inundation of water in your Monterey Park business over a long holiday weekend. Shop owners coping with plumbing emergencies typically need professional water damage repair services.
After you find standing water in your boutique in Monterey Park, water damage repair services can help you protect everything. We seal any leaks, including shutting the water off at the main valve. Even the smallest holes in an appliance's water supply line can widen and release even more water per minute because of the tremendous pressure inside your plumbing. After we close the main valve, the force that remains helps us find any additional leaks.
More than finding the leaks and shutting off the water main is needed to protect your business's future. SERVPRO also does the following to help keep things moving forward for you:
- Restoration of inventory and equipment,
- Cleaning and drying the interior, and
- Demolishing and rebuilding damaged walls, etc.
Even though water leaking into your store is clean, it can carry contaminants that easily ruin your purchased and manufactured goods. Your equipment can also become compromised from direct contact or elevated humidity levels that induce corrosion. We wipe surfaces clean while checking for signs of damage. We also compile an inventory list detailing restored items and things that were too destroyed for successful restoration.
One component we perform while we repair water-damaged shops involves cleaning the area of contaminants and silts that have accumulated and are now lifted to the surface by the water. Removing condensation and then drying everything helps prevent mold and more extensive destruction.
Pulling out cut-away sections of drywall and paneling allows for new materials. When flooring retains water, we use our InjectiDry system to combine heat and airflow to remove the excess moisture. With carpeting, we detach it and force air underneath. Once dry, we evenly stretch the section and refasten it to the tack strips.
Calling SERVPRO of Monterey Park at (626) 656-6577 when you need water damage repair means your business recovers faster.

Infestations Water Damage Restoration Fixes in Monterey Park

SERVPRO gives you access to expertly trained mold remediation specialists that put vast resources and years of experience to work for you.
SERVPRO Offers Monterey Park One-Stop Water Remediation
Water leaks may bother you because of the physical problems they cause, like slippery floors and the physical deterioration of materials. However, that is only part of the problem since your Monterey Park premises can develop other issues or may even be infested by unwanted critters.
Decisive water damage restoration at your Monterey Park home fixes or stops material deterioration and eliminates the infestation. SERVPRO provides the expertise to identify and address the problems at the earliest stages when it is easier to get solutions.
Your home may develop these problems:
- Mold
- Insects
- Contamination
- Odors
One or two insects crawling along the floor may not be a big issue, but when you see hordes of them, you know it is time to take action. Moisture attracts different insects, including Silverfish, Centipedes, Earwigs, and cockroaches. Even extermination may only provide long-term relief if you resolve the moisture problem.
Material Colonization
Moisture on structural materials like wood and contents made of fabrics creates the perfect opportunity for microbial growth and other forms of contamination. Microbial growth mostly manifests as mold, which can stain or leave rot-like deterioration. Some problems may be invisible, such as developing pungent odors and contamination. Various processes are necessary to address these issues, including halting microbial growth and removing invading substances. Our SERVPRO technicians have the essential equipment to facilitate these processes.
Necessary water restoration procedures:
- Cleaning
- Chemical application
- Water extraction
- Drying
Whether the water originates from a clean source or not, there is a need to clean all the affected surfaces. The moisture interacts with materials spreading loose dust and diluting fabric dyes leading to soiling. If there is contamination, our SERVPRO technicians use disinfectants to neutralize them. Other processes include extracting any standing water and drying wet materials.
SERVPRO of Monterey Park understands the need to handle water damage restoration comprehensively. Call us at (626) 656-6577 whenever your property needs attention. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How To Put Out a Kitchen Fire In Your Home
For many homeowners, one of the greatest joys you can have is cooking homemade meals. However, that joy can quickly change to fear when facing a fire. Regardless of your experience in the kitchen, a fire can happen to anyone at any time. As a result, everyone needs to be familiar with the process of extinguishing one. The following is a step-by-step guide to putting out a grease fire in your home.
1. Eliminate the heat source. The first step you need to take is removing the heat source by turning your burner off or unplugging the stove. This will help keep the fire from getting out of control. Be sure to wear oven mitts to avoid burns.
2. Smother the flames. The best method for eliminating a stovetop or oven fire is to smother it by putting a lid over the pan. This quickly cuts off the oxygen supply. Make sure to use a lid that is not made of glass, as the intense heat can cause it to shatter. Another option is to use baking soda and pour a generous quantity on the fire. If you own a fire extinguisher, you can use this as a third option. Never use water on a grease fire, as oil and water do not mix, and this can cause an explosion.
3. Call 911. If the above steps do not eliminate the fire, or if it spreads, call 911 immediately and evacuate everyone in the residence. Do not stay and continue to attempt to put out the fire; your life is much more important.
Dealing with a grease fire in your home in Monterey Park, CA, is a terrifying experience. By arming yourself with the knowledge of how to properly handle one before it starts, you can get it under control and prevent excessive damage from occurring. Afterward, fire restoration services can help you with fire cleanup and assess any damage.

How Water Damage Can Create a Mold Issue in Your Monterey Park Home or Business
8/8/2022 (Permalink)
Water Damage Inside The Drywall Can Cause Mold. Call Us Right Away At The First Sign of Damage!
The goal during any water damage situation is to remove moisture as quickly as possible and preferably within 48 hours so that mold/fungi cannot form. When your home or business in Monterey Park gets negatively affected by moisture, professional companies like SERVPRO can help reduce the severity. In most cases, we speed up the natural evaporation and drying process by utilizing air movers and dehumidifiers. The air movers create air flow so that water keeps evaporating from wet surfaces while dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air and provide the fans with hot, dry air. However, when certain building materials receive water damage, other measures must be taken to drop moisture levels and prevent mold growth quickly.
When water leaks into your home, it usually accumulates on the floor first. Then, it soaks into your drywall and starts to wick its way up your walls, possibly causing extensive water damage to your Monterey Park property. If wall cavities get wet, fungi can form on the paper backing of the drywall and the wooden studs to which the drywall is attached. In some scenarios, our SERVPRO technicians cut the drywall a foot or two (sometimes four) up from the floor so that air can get pushed into the wall cavity. In other situations, we use advanced technology to dry out the drywall and the wood trapped behind it without tearing up your walls.
Our highly trained team always strives hard to provide fast 24/7 service if you ever suffer a property disaster. If you notice that your drywall got wet after a water leak, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park at (626) 656-6577 right away!

What To Do While Waiting For SERVPRO After Water Damage Strikes

A Water Damaged Home in Alhambra, CA.
Call SERVPRO of Monterey Park @ 626-656-6577
SERVPRO of Monterey Park will be on the scene quickly after a water damage event, but while you are waiting for us to arrive, there are some things that you can do to prepare for the cleanup.
Here is your to-do list:
- Safety assessment. This is the first order of business: making sure that affected areas are safe for anyone who may come in contact with them. If your flooring has been affected, you will want to ensure that it is safe to walk on in order to avoid slips, trips, and falls or a possible collapse. Look for exposed wiring, sharp edges, and sharp objects as well. Make sure everyone in your home or business are safe and accounted for, and see to any needs that may come up.
- Take stock of the damage. Get your camera or smartphone out and take pictures of all the damaged areas and belongings. This will be helpful to have on hand for your insurance adjuster. Make a folder just for the water damage event, and keep all the photos there. If you need to, you can add descriptive notes as to what the area looked like before the event occurred, as well as any helpful notations that may seem important.
- Insurance. Contact your agent and let them know what has happened. Ask them what they require to make their assessment, and provide them with whatever they ask for. Obtain a copy of your policy and make sure you have all the pages it should include. If the damage is extensive or if there have been injuries and you anticipate a claim being filed, contact an attorney who specializes in these kinds of events.
- Dry it up. If you have safe premises, it will be a good idea to start the drying process if the event is not too big for you alone. Sweep water away from corners, for example, and mop up standing water. Move any affected machinery or furniture away from the areas that will be focused on if you can do so safely.
The SERVPRO of Monterey Park is a team of water damage cleanup experts. We handle fire damage and mold remediation too!
Mold Problem Inside Your Monterey Park Residence?
7/26/2022 (Permalink)
If you find any signs of mold - call us @ 626-656-6577
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold.

Water Heater - Hot Water Pipe Leak
7/7/2022 (Permalink)
One of the most basic dangers of a leaking water heater is the damage to the surrounding floor and walls.
There are generally 3 reasons to consider why a hot water pipe starts leaking:
- There is increased water pressure in the tank
- A faulty float valve
- An overused washer
One of the most basic dangers of a leaking water heater is the damage to the surrounding floor and walls. Again, it can lead to mold and even seep down into the foundation of the home and can weaken the foundation. If water is coming from the water heater it has the potential to be dangerous and even deadly. If gas is leaking near the water heater, the ignition flame can ignite the gas causing an explosion. The water pressure heats and begins to build up pressure inside the tank which causes the explosion.
We're here to help. Call SERVPRO of Monterey Park for immediate assistance.

Leading Cause of House Fires In Monterey Park
6/4/2022 (Permalink)
Keep these tips in mind and prevent unexpected house fires!
Here are 5 of the most well known causes of house fires --- but that doesn't mean they can't happen unexpectedly.
1. Unattended cooking. It only takes a minute or two for burning pots and food to start a fire. If you're away from the stove or oven, you may not know your kitchen is on fire until it's too late. If you must walk away, be certain to ask someone else to watch the food, or turn off the burners until you return.
2. Heating. Space heaters - wonderful source of heat or supplemental heat, but they can become a danger when placed near flammable items, such as window treatments. If you have one that does not have auto shut-off when it is tipped over, be extra careful when placing the heater on a surface in your home.
3. Smoking in Bedrooms. Did you know that 73% of all fatalities from a house fire comes from someone smoking in their bedroom? The burning can smolder unnoticed by someone who is asleep and suddenly turn into a fire. When it comes to smoking in the bedroom - don't do it. It's hard to break a habit, but you can start a "new normal" and make a point of smoking outside.
4. Electrical Equipment. Check all of your appliances to ensure that none have a frayed cord, which can start an electrical fire. The next most common reason for an electrical fire comes from overloading power outlets. Do not overload outlets with double adapter plugs. It's very risky and unsafe.
5. Candles. Candles are so nice to have - they smell wonderful, and give off a subtle ambience. As nice as they are, we sometimes leaves them burning unattended. It happens. We forget. Always blow a candle out when leaving a room or leaving the house. Ensure that you are not locating candles anywhere near flammable items, such as books, papers, curtains.
Always stay safe!
Local SERVPRO Fire Remediation Specialist Advises Monterey Park Grill Masters To Prepare Now For A Safe, Savory Outdoor Cooking Season
5/26/2022 (Permalink)
Stay safe with family and friends during BBQ season!
For many, the Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer season. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns families that the onset of the summer season also marks a rise in home fires started by outdoor grilling activities. According to the NFPA, on average, 10,600 home fires are started by grills each year. July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August.
Sixty-one percent of U.S. households own a gas grill. A total of sixty-four percent own at least one outdoor BBQ, grill, or smoker. The popularity of this outdoor cooking equipment combined with longer, warmer days creates a unique fire hazard that should be taken seriously.”
The time to take precautions is now, before the outdoor cooking season is in full swing. The NFPA offers these basic tips for fire-safe grilling:
For gas/propane grills:
- Check the gas tank for leaks before using.
- Open the lid on all gas grills before lighting the grill.
For charcoal grills:
- Use only charcoal starter fluid to start the fire but never add it or any flammable liquids to a fire that is burning.
- Cool coals completely before you dispose of them in a metal container.
For all grills:
- Place grill well away from house and deck railings. Don’t place under eaves or branches.
- Remove grease and fat buildup from grills and trays after each use.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill.
- Never leave the grill unattended when in use.
Basic precautions set the stage for a safe and enjoyable outdoor cooking season. Life is unpredictable, but you can take steps to control the risk of house and property fires caused by outdoor cooking. Whether you are strictly a summer grilling warrior or you use your grill year-round, simple, common-sense actions can help ensure that the only smoke you smell this summer is the sweet aroma of steaks and vegetables grilling.

Truths and Myths About Lightning

It's important that we know our facts about the weather patterns to prepare for any future emergencies. Learn the common myths and facts about lightning during spring.
Myth: If it's not raining, then there is no danger from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. This is especially true in the western United States where thunderstorms sometimes produce very little rain.
Myth: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck by lightning.
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires proved no protection from lightning. The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
Myth: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact: "Heat lightning" is a term used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.

How To Be Ready: Handling Storm Damage
5/7/2022 (Permalink)
Professional restoration services in Monterey Park, CA | Call SERVPRO of Monterey Park @ 626-656-6577
Before the storm hits, homeowners are concerned about their safety first. This is important; however, when the storm dies down and you’re left with pieces to pick up, it’s important to know how to deal with it. The more you know in advance, the easier the process is sure to be. This process involves handling water damage, deciding what to tear out and a full storm restoration.
- Extract All Water
Because you often can’t get back into your home until all the water is removed, it’s imperative that you invest in flood water extraction. Keep in mind that flood water is often contaminated. After 24 hours, it’s considered black water and full of contaminants. The safest and most effective option is to have someone with the proper gear and tools to extract the water.
- Tear Out Wet Materials
Water damage can lead to professionals having to tear out any and all wet materials. This could be paneling, flooring and a number of different household materials that may need to be dried out. While some might be salvageable, once the material has sat in water, it’s likely that the damage on some of it is irreversible.
- Dry Out Structure
With the damp materials out, it’s time to dry the inside of your home. This can be done by professional services in Monterey Park, CA if you want to have it done quickly and effectively.
- Begin Restoration
Storm restoration can begin once you’ve completed the tear out and drying. After this, you can bring the undamaged items back into your home and begin to rebuild. The reason it’s important not to start this step until after the cleanup is complete is that you never want to rebuild when there’s a risk that there may still be water damage or mold left behind.
When the storm is over, the cleanup process is still only beginning. Fortunately, these four steps should be able to help you understand the importance of assessing what you need to tear out after water has damaged your home to start your storm restoration.

Who's Responsible for Apartment Complex Water Damage?
5/2/2022 (Permalink)
Unfortunately, water damage is a common issue both homeowners and renters can face. The aftermath can be devastating making the property unlivable and permanent damage may occur to personal belongings. When water damage occurs in an apartment, who is responsible for the damage cost? The property owner or renter?
Renter Rights
Water damage can be unpredictable and it is important to understand your renter rights and understand who is responsible for what in such an event. In general, a landlord is responsible for maintaining the property ensuring that the apartment is livable and functioning up to code. The landlord may refuse repairs, or fail to address them quick enough – causing further damage such as mold. In the United States, basic principles in tenant rights are in place and outline the party liable for damages. Depending on the state, rent details can vary so check with your local housing authority.
Review Your Lease
It’s important to know what your lease states regarding property damage. Most properties have property insurance and will list what type of damage that is covered and what is not. The lease may specify actions that may be in place depending on the severity of the water damage. If the damage is severe and the apartment is unlivable is the tenant still required to pay the rent? Can the landlord evict the tenant or can the tenant cancel their lease without penalty? In general, if the damage is minor, the tenant will not be able to cancel the lease agreement. If the terms regarding property damage are not listed in the lease, speak to your landlord about who is responsible in the event when water damage strikes.
Renters Insurance
Accidents happen which is why it is essential to have renters insurance. Most places require you have it before allowing you to move into an apartment. Depending on the plan you select, coverage can vary from damages to the building, personal content and may even cover the cost of lodging while repairs are being completed.
Landlord Responsibilities
The landlord is responsible for maintaining a functional apartment and ensuring that it is livable. The upkeep of basic plumbing such as sinks, toilets and tubs fall on the shoulders of the landlord. Failure to maintain or repair these functions may lead to property damage and the landlord is liable due to negligence.
Damage to Property and Personal Belongings
Water damages caused to the building itself such as flooring, walls and utilities should be covered under the landlord’s property insurance. Personal property damages fall to the responsibility of the party at fault for damages, which can be the tenant. For example, if the tenant leaves a faucet on and falls asleep causing water damage.
How We Can Help
Water damage requires a rapid response in order to minimize loss to both the property itself and belongings inside. SERVPRO of Monterey Park technicians are experts at water damage cleanup in apartments and buildings of all sizes no matter severity of the damage. 10 Things Home Owners In Monterey Park Should Be Doing to Prevent Mold
5/2/2022 (Permalink)
Regardless if you’re a new homeowner or if you’ve been in the same home for forty years, it’s absolutely vital to make sure you take the proper precautions to fight off and prevent mold and mildew in your home or office. Mold is basically tiny fungi that grow in branch-like filaments called hyphae. While some mold and mildew can be scrubbed away with the right cleaning products, other types of mold can do severe damage to the structure of your home and it can be very expensive to repair. Not only is mold horrible for your home, but it’s also very dangerous. Mold can cause a number of health effects.
Unfortunately, certain kinds of toxic mold are undetectable by the naked eye. That’s why it’s so important to follow these guidelines to make sure that you’re protecting yourself and your home from the potential risks of mold and mildew.
1. Be Aware of Air Flow
When trying to prevent mold, take note of the arrangement of furniture and other items in your home. You want to make sure you have a proper airflow throughout the house. When moisture gets trapped, you’re increasing your chances of mold. Always be aware of odd smells or odors in the home that may represent mold or mildew. Any kind of musty smells will most likely be a sign of mold growth.
2. Know Your Moisture Levels
Most people don’t really know how much moisture they have floating around their home, but it’s important to keep an eye on these levels, especially in basements. Basements should always be below 50% humidity to prevent mold. If you’re worried about how much humidity is in your home, you can purchase a hygrometer. A lot of the new thermometers for central air and heat in more modern homes will include a humidity level setting on the monitor.
3. Check All Storage
When moving into a new home, it’s easy to toss unwanted cardboard boxes and bins into the garage and then forget they were ever there. If it’s been a while since you’ve explored through the storage in your garage, basement or attic, you may want to give it a good check. Cardboard boxes in low ventilated areas are a breeding ground for mold. You also want to stay away from keeping your items in cardboard boxes or on wooden shelves.
4. Keep Moisture Rich Areas Clean
To prevent mold it’s important to consistently clean areas of the house that are exposed to moisture often, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Routinely remove all of the items on your counter-tops and use anti-mold or mildew cleaning products. If water gets trapped in areas for longer than 48-hours, then mold can become apparent.
5. Utilize Exhaust Fans
When showering or cooking, remember to always use your exhaust fans. Some people will only turn exhaust fans on after showering, but this is a big mold prevention no-no. Always be sure to have the fan on during a hot shower, as well as for some time after a shower to make sure that all of the humidity has dissipated.
6. Be Aware of Leaks
It’s important to have your house checked randomly throughout the year for leaks. A leaky pipe that goes unnoticed can create havoc in a household. Something that might be simple to fix one day, can turn into a nightmare if it goes undetected. Have a mold remediation company occasionally check your home for potential leaks to save yourself money in the long run.
7. Remove Carpet in Basements
While some carpets may feel cozy and look great in a basement, they can turn into a fuzzy hotel for fungus. Basements are infamous for holding in moisture and carpets can make these matters much worse. If you’re looking to upgrade your home in the near future, tearing out carpets in the basement not only saves you from potential mold, but it can also increase your property value.
8. Keep Roof and Gutters Clean
With heavy rain, moisture can clog up your gutters and cause cracks in your roof. It can build up near corners or crevasses in doorways. Keeping your roof and your gutters clean throughout the year can help you to prevent mold in these areas.
9. Use Mold Prevention Based Paints
If you happen to be renovating or moving into a new home, it’s the perfect time to find quality mold inhibiting paints and primers. Ask an expert at your local home improvement store which kind of paints are best for fighting off mold and mildew.
10. Change Out Air Filters
Everyone should always be aware of the air quality in their home. Changing out air filters or purchasing air purifiers can add an extra layer of protection in your home.
Having the above ten steps on your checklist will help you to prevent mold in your home. If you do suspect there is mold in your home, call the experts at SERVPRO of Monterey Park to inspect and remove it for you.
Commercial Fire Damage Restoration in Monterey Park
5/2/2022 (Permalink)
When a fire strikes your commercial property -- Call our SERVPRO of Monterey Park experts (626) 656-6577
When a fire strikes your commercial property, it's quite likely that you feel yourself start to panic. This immediate reaction makes sense given all of the economic turmoil and property destruction that a fire can cause. However, knowing which steps to take in the face of a Monterey Park commercial fire can help prevent you from becoming anxious, losing money, and undergoing extensive property damages. To handle a Monterey Park commercial fire successfully and promptly, implement the following four tips:
1. Contact A Fire Remediation Expert.
Once the fire department has doused all of the flames, be sure to call a fire remediation expert. This individual will be able to equip you with a thorough assessment indicating the extent of the damages. Don't ever attempt to handle any of the cleanups, drying, or restoration processes on your own. Doing so could put you in peril of injury and illness.
2. Assemble Your Records.
In addition to contacting a fire remediation expert, make sure that you assemble your business's essential records. You'll want to have this information with you when you start working with your insurance company. To guarantee that you can have all of your files ready in a safe place, make a point to buy a fireproof safe where they can be stored.
3. Call The Insurance Company Immediately.
Be sure that you call your insurance company once the fire is put out. This step is important because your insurance agent will work with you to file a claim and determine how much coverage you'll attain for the commercial damages.
4. Get Permission To Reenter The Building.
Always ask the fire department or another local authority whether you can reenter your building. In some cases, Monterey Park fires can weaken the structural integrity of the commercial property and make it subject to collapse. This is why you need to assure that reentry is safe for you and your employees.

We Have Sufficient Equipment Here At SERVPRO of Monterey Park!
4/13/2022 (Permalink)
Stocked with all the top tier equipment!
- Equipment is one of the essential parts of any business. Our franchise is equipped for various types of water mitigation equipment.
Detection Equipment:
- Moisture Sensors: Used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
- Moisture Meters: Used to detect the actual moisture content of various materials.
- Thermohydrometers: measures both temperature and relative humidity. After getting these two readings, we can calculate specific humidity, dew point, and vapor pressure.
Extraction Equipment:
- Extractors- used in cleaning carpets and upholstery and in removing water from floors following water damage. Extractors can be truck-mounted or portable.
Air Moving Equipment:
- Air Movers- used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, reducing drying time. This moisture is eliminated using the dehumidification equipment.
Dehumidification Equipment:
- Dehumidifiers- By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the humidity. They pull the moist, humid air in and discharge dry, warm atmosphere. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials.
Eliminating Mold Damage in Monterey Park Homes
4/13/2022 (Permalink)
Don't wait! Call us now!
Many Monterey Park residents somehow think mold is their fault, either through neglect or poor housekeeping. The reality is that mold spores are present in every home, regardless of how much bleach the owner uses. These spores are also no more harmful than common house dust until the right circumstances and requirements are met.
Mold damage to Monterey Park homes can only happen when there is enough moisture present in the right temperature range to activate these tiny spores which begin feeding on a nearby food source. Stopping further growth requires understanding how mold grows and finding the best way to interrupt it and prevent growth in the future immediately. At SERVPRO of Monterey Park, our response teams train to do just that.
Inert and active mold spores cluster together. Each spore is smaller than the width of a human hair, and a cluster of thousands is still so small it can fit on the head of a thumbtack. They remain this small, and inert until they absorb enough moisture from a small pool of rainwater or an even smaller plumbing leak. With only a tiny amount of water, the spores extend hyphae which grow over and into food sources like drywall, wood framing, and even roof tiles.
That is why our teams ask two questions of every homeowner: Where is the mold and have you had a leak of any type recently? The answers tell our technicians where to look for mold and the source of the moisture that triggered the spores to begin growing.
It applies to storm flooding, recent fires, and broken plumbing. In each instance, an unusual amount of water, large or small, has entered the home. SERVPRO of Monterey Park knows the type is important because flooding and the fire department can soak carpets and floors while broken plumbing might be a split pipe or water hose in the garage or laundry room.
Flood water can also drain through the floor, or down the stairs, into the basement. Since this part of the home is not usually part of daily life, mold can grow here longer than in a bathroom or elsewhere before someone notices it. Our teams need to eliminate this, and every source of moisture, regardless of where it might be. If they do not, then the owner soon has a recurring problem.
If you are dealing with water now, or a mold problem caused by the previous flooding, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park at (626) 656-6577 today. We are here to help you and your home.

Incidents such as fire does not come with notice. It is an unpredictable accident, but there are ways to reduce its consequences. Below, you can find tips for your home’s fire safety.
#1 Identify Fire Protection System
Each house should have a fire prevention and it is essential to familiarize yourself with them. These systems can consist of a sprinkler system throughout each building, and the vast majority of apartments have a fire alarm pull station to alert nearby residents.
#2 Check Smoke Alarms
Each apartment is equipped with a smoke alarm, but it is always a good idea to test these alarms on a regular basis. Typically, checking a smoke detect alarm once a month is sufficient. Always replace any smoke alarms that are older than ten years.
#3 Locate Fire Extinguishers
Locate fire extinguishers around areas of home that are exposed more to fire like the kitchen. Make sure to check the status of the extinguishers before they expire!
#4 Never Leave Food on the Stove Unattended

Where Should You Look For Water Leaks?
4/12/2022 (Permalink)
Call us now for a full inspection
It can be overwhelming to find water damage on your property.
To get started, here are five familiar places to find water leaks:
1. Water Heaters
Water heaters leak all the time, especially when they are old. About 70% of all failures have been the result of a leak or burst.
2. Toilets
Toilets are the appliance that passes the most amount of water each day. In this situation, turn off the main water switch and inspect the tank. You may have to call a plumber, depending on the severity of the problem.
3. Water Pipes
Leaky pipes are one of the leading causes of water damage. One of the scariest thoughts is that most pipes are hidden, often leading to hidden water damage until it has seeped through the building materials and is noticeable through walls and floors. Be sure to have a licensed plumber inspect them every so often to prevent any potential water damage.
4. Gutters
While many sources of water damage occur within the home, external issues, like blocked gutters, also cause for concern. With every fall and spring, hire a professional or clear away the debris from the gutters yourself to allow water to flow freely away from the foundation.
5. Sinks and Showers
Similar to washing machines and refrigerators, tubs and showers are among the most common sources of water damage.

SERVPRO of Monterey Park -- We're always here to help.
Unexpected home damage is always a shock for homeowners. It can be difficult to determine what to do next or how to react.
That’s why we always recommend that homeowners plan ahead for these types of situations, so if the damage occurs, they’ll know immediately who to call. But how do you know you’re choosing the right restoration company?
There is a lot of information surrounding the restoration industry, so it is important to narrow it down by determining what’s actually important. Here are some key points to consider when making your choice:
Their Areas of Expertise
It is not uncommon for home damages to require more than one aspect of restoration. For example, cleaning up fire damage involves ridding the air of toxic particles and water damage often involves restoring structures. A company that is certified and experienced in all aspects of damage will be a much safer bet than one that is not.
Their Night and Weekend Availability
Damages have a knack for occurring at the most inconvenient times, so it is important to pick a company that will be there whenever you call. Because we have a 24/7 emergency line, we are able to guarantee we’ll always be there when you need us.
Their Level of Training
It is important for a company to invest in the training of their technicians to guarantee they will be prepared for any damage situation that arises. The restoration industry has high standards for training, which is what we use as our guideline for all educational materials.
Their Ability to Scale
Because we are a local franchise with a national network of other locations, we can scale as needed for larger disasters. This ensures that we can treat a single-home fire with the same level of care as we would a city-wide disaster, providing exceptional service in both cases.
If you have experienced storm damage, we are always here to help! Call our restoration experts 24/7 so we can address your damages quickly.

Fire Damage -- Things To Avoid Doing Before We Arrive.
4/11/2022 (Permalink)
Fire loss in a residential building
If you experience fire or smoke damage in your home, here are some things that you should NOT do while waiting for your remediation crew to arrive.
Don't:
- Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Monterey Park.

Fire Disaster: Mitigating Both Fire and Water Damage
4/6/2022 (Permalink)
Fire loss in a Monterey Park, CA property
A fire disaster consists of more than flames. A property may also experience flooding during rescue efforts as well as toxicity in soot and smoke remnants. Therefore, such a disaster is three-fold and, depending on the extent of the damage, you may wish to call in an expert to assist you in the fire and water cleanup of your building. Fire mitigation companies in Monterey Park, CA clean disasters by performing a minimum of three tasks.
- Reducing exposure
- Drying the premises
- Removing fire and smoke damage
Reducing Exposure
The first objective of any fire cleanup effort is to reduce exposure to the elements and possible trespassers. Therefore, the company you hire will typically suggest boarding up any damaged windows and doors. They may also suggest placing tarps over any large holes in the roofline. By taking advantage of these services, you know that your facility is protected.
Drying the Premises
Next, while water cleanup might sound a little out of place in fire restoration, you need to remember the rescue efforts and possibly suppression systems in use in your building. Fire hoses produce gallons of water per minute, which collects on your floor when attempting to put out the flames. Therefore, a mitigation crew will spend some time using pumps, fans, shop vacs and dehumidifiers to dry out your property.
Removing Fire and Smoke Damage
Once the premises are dry, the crew will begin the fire and smoke cleanup phase. At this point, the team will remove damaged structure and clean the remainder of the building, ensuring that they have a sanitary foundation for restoration work.
Fire, smoke and water cleanup are all a part of the fire restoration and mitigation process. While minor blazes may be manageable on your own, for more significant disasters, you may require the assistance of a qualified mitigation expert. Don't hesitate to call when disaster strikes.

How To Handle A Sudden Pipe Burst In The Kitchen
2/25/2022 (Permalink)
Burst Supply Line Under Sink
Steps To Take After a Pipe Burst
You come home to find a geyser in your kitchen causing minor flooding. What do you do? Obviously, you hop on the internet and look for the answer. Well, you’re in luck. Below are the initial steps you should take after a pipe break in your kitchen.
1. Shut Off the Water
To stop a faucet from spewing water in the home, you should immediately shut off the valves under the sink. By turning off the valves, you cut off the water supply and end the unintentional geyser, thereby preventing further water damage. If the supply line is damaged below the shut-off valve then you may want to turn off the main water supply to the house.
2. Call Your Policy Holder
As most homeowner policies will cover flooding caused by broken pipes – as long as the damage was not caused by neglect – you can call your insurer to discuss next steps. Most insurers will require you to file a claim, which will need to be investigated by an adjuster. An adjuster will come to your home, inspect the damage, and make a recommendation to your insurer about any potential coverage.
3. Dry the Affected Area
An adjuster visit can happen quickly, or it can take a week or more. In the meantime, you can mitigate any further damage by drying the affected areas. If the exposure time was minimal, then it may be enough to dry items with mops and towels. If the exposure time was significant, then some tear out may be necessary to ensure adequate drying and to reduce the risk of mold growth.
4. Call a Restoration Specialist
Depending on the exposure time and the extent of the damage, you may want to hire a restoration specialist in Monterey Park, CA, for your kitchen repair. If the damage was extensive enough to make a claim then your insurer may require professional repair anyway.
Flooding in your kitchen can be substantial if left unchecked. While it is possible to catch this type of disaster early and prevent extensive repair, the expanse of the pipe break may determine if you require professional assistance, especially if filing a claim.
Most Common Types of Water Leaks
12/22/2021 (Permalink)
Your toilet is a very common source of water leakage. Be sure to replace your toilet flapper every two years.
No homeowner wants water leaks as uncontrolled water sources can lead to damage in your home and drive up water bills way past your monthly budget. A lot of the times, leaking water goes unnoticed and long term water leaks can lead to severe damage and better yet, void coverage from your insurance company. To ensure that your home is free from water leaks, it is important to know the most common type of water leaks. We will discuss preventative measure later on.
Burst Pipe
Water pipes are highly sensitive to temperature (especially cold temperatures). Pipes burst frequently during the winter due to expansion of freezing water. Pipes don't usually burst at the site of freezing. Rather, they burst in the area between frozen blockage and the faucet. The blockage causes the pipe to expand and burst. 37% of bursting pipes occur in the basement where temperatures near 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the freezing point of water. In order to prevent bursting pipes, it is important to regulate temperatures near pipes and also conduct a routine maintenance for pipes especially in cold regions during the winter time.
Toilet Supply Line
The line that connects the toilet to the sewage system is frequently a source for many water leaks. Thankfully, this is as easy as replacing or tightening and does not require as much remediation as bursting pipes. A toilet supply line needs to be replaced if the leak occurs between the fitting and it needs to be tightened if it's around the fitting. A toilet supply line is easier detected than water leaks from bursting pipes so be wary of this source.
Appliance leaks
Many appliances can have water leaks: dishwashers, washing machines, faucets, refrigerators. Rubber tubes from washing machines are the most common types of leaks. For a top load washing machine, leaks in the front could mean overflow tube is blocked or tilted and this is normally caused by loading too much detergent. For front load washing machines, leaks in the front are probably caused by damaged door seal, leaking water intake hose, and leaking outer drum.
Hot Water Tank/Boiler
Another common source of leaks is a hot water tank/boiler and there can be many locations of water leaks. Either the pipes could be corroded or the tank itself is corroded and might need to be replaced. If water is leaking from the heater itself, its probably from the pressure release valve. Be mindful in dealing with water damage from hot water tanks as they can burn you.
Leaking Toilet
A leaking toilet can cost up to 90 gallons of water per day and cause your water bill to be exorbitant. It is important to maintain your toilet flapper every two years. An eroded flapper can continuously cause water to flush.
Irrigation System
Your irrigation system consists of pipes connected to your sprinklers. You should maintain your irrigation system at least once every couple of years.
Now that you know the most common sources of water leaks, you can do your utmost best to prevent further water leaks. Save yourself the money from the water damage and the water waste. Undetected water leaks can cause severe structural damage to your home and drain your monthly budget without any warning. If you need an inspection or maintenance of identifying sources of water damage or water leaks, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
Restoring vs Replacing Your Carpeting
12/22/2021 (Permalink)
Consult a restoration professional to see if your carpet requires replacement or not but defaulting to a replacement ensures no risks.
Upholstered furniture and carpeting is extremely sensitive to any exposure to water. The cleaning process needs to begin almost immediately when dealing with a water damaged carpet. Usually carpeting needs to be replaced since it is a highly sensitive material and fosters mold growth very easily but there are certain cases where restoration is more favorable in terms of cost. Here are certain guidelines in restoring or replacing your water damaged carpet.
Before deciding what you want to do with your carpet, you should consider evaluation of restoration or replacement based on these conditions:
- Amount of water in the carpeting The amount of water that has made it into carpeting may make it harder to get rid of water and moisture in the carpet. If there is too much water, then the drying process might take longer and at that point, you are better off replacing your carpet.
- Length of time water sat in carpeting The length of time water sits in your carpeting correlates with the risk of mold growth in the carpet. The amount of water can impact the length of time of the drying process. If water is retained in the carpet for too long, you should probably consider replacing the carpeting.
- Source of water in the carpeting You should only consider restoration if you are certain that the water source contains clean water. Gray water or black water harbors hazardous contaminants: toilet backflow, sewer water, chemical water.
- Can the material be restored? Some materials of carpet do not allow for restoration since the carpet is immediately destroyed when pulled from the flooring. Consult an expert when considering restoring your carpet to see if you have restorable carpet.
Most of the time, homeowners opt for a carpet replacement as there are too many uncertainties with carpet damage and water damage from carpeting may also pose health hazards. You can also clean a carpet yourself with some DIY solutions but it is not advised as professionals are able to evaluate the restorability of your carpet as well as having the tools and knowledge when it comes to carpet restoration. It's best to leave it to professionals. If you are unsure of your carpet's restorability, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
Creating A Flood-Proof Home
12/21/2021 (Permalink)
A floating home in a flood hazard zone is ideal since the house is always above water level. A floating home can withstand a category 4 hurricane.
Flooding is one the most common weather disasters and has cost Americans billions of dollars in repairs. When flood-proofing your home, it is first necessary to identify the frequency of flooding in your home. FEMA's flood map service helps you identify areas that are prone to frequent flooding.
Blue Zone: 1% chance of flooding per year. This is considered a hazardous area and you should take steps to flood-proof your home. Flood insurance rates are high in these zones.
Orange Zone: 0.2% chance of flooding per year. This is less hazardous but flooding precautions may still be necessary if you don't want to take any chances.
Yellow Zone: Flood risk is undetermined so it is recommended that you do your own research on the area's flooding history and ask around about flooding history. Still take precautions.
Blue with Red Stripes Zone: This is an area that regularly floods that are usually near bodies of water. These areas should be kept clear. If your house is in this zone, take huge precautions and secure your home from imminent flooding.
Adding flooding precautions to your home
Flood precautions can range from simple regular maintenances to expensive renovations. You should take into consideration the extent of your flood renovations depending on how much you can afford to spend. Here are some steps to prevent flooding in your home.
Install foundation vents or sump pump
Foundation vents allow water that pools up around your home to flow away from your home allowing flood water to run off and alleviates water pressure on your home's structural foundation. Installing a sump pump is also useful as a sump pump pumps water out of the basement which happens quite frequently when living in a frequent flooding zone.
Coating and sealants
Applying coating and sealants to foundations, walls, windows, and doorways help prevent water from gaining entry into your home. This is a simple and inexpensive way of flood-proofing your home.
Install check valves on pipes
Pipes have valves that prevent a flooded sewage system from backing up into your home. Gate valves are ideal since they are more sealed and can withstand flood pressure.
Check the angle of your lawn
If your lawn slopes towards your home, you might need to regrade your lawn as flood water can run off your lawn and pool around your home.
Check mulch and siding
There needs to be adequate space between mulch and the siding of your house. Wet mulch can easily rot foundation and floodwater frequently enables this process.
Point downspouts away from home
Downspouts indicate where gutter runoff leads to and they should be pointed away from your home. Double check this in the event of flood precautioning.
Building a flood-proof home
When a house is surrounded by floodwater, it is subject to upwards lateral forces. A home's structural integrity should be adjusted to account for this frequent lateral force. When you are in the early stages of building a home or can afford the renovations for flood precautions, here are some steps you can take to mitigate floodwater damages.
Creating a floating home
A floating house will always be above water level, so flooding will have little impact in a flood sensitive area. Consult an expert home builder.
Install stilts
The greatest way to counteract the damages caused by flooding is to raise the elevation of the home above the ground. A great way to do this to install stilts that can be installed on raised platforms.
Solid floor
Having a wooden floor makes your floor prone to damage. Wooden floors are somewhat porous and can rot or be affected by mold. Having a solid floor mitigates the damages from flood water.
If you have any other questions on how to mitigate floodwater damages or need help with repairs from storm damage, call us now at SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
DIY Mold Removal
12/17/2021 (Permalink)
You can create your own mold cleaning solution depending on the surface and the amount of mold damage.
If you have slight mold damage, you can definitely take steps to remove mold on your own. Restoration companies are usually hired in the event that mold damage is at a larger scale. Here are some steps and guidelines for some DIY mold removal.
- Ensure your own protection against mold. Mold can cause health hazards and it's important to limit your own exposure against mold. When treating a mold affected area be sure that you aren't inhaling any mold. Wearing a mask or a N-95 respirator will help prevent you from inhaling any mold particles. Also wear gloves that extend to the middle of your forearm to limit your skin's potential exposure when cleaning mold. Wear goggles that don't have holes or openings in them.
- Removing mold. You can use detergent and water as a solution to scrub off mold from surfaces. Depending on the type of surface, you need to use different tools to scrub with. A drywall sensitive to abrasion and use only a rag to try and scrub off mold. Also, depending on how porous a surface or material is, you might need to replace the mold infested material rather than clean. If you don't know what surfaces/material needs to be replaced you can call SERVPRO of Monterey Park for a free mold inspection. There are mold cleaning solutions that can be bought and are more efficient than detergent and water. Once mold is removed, make sure the surface is dry before painting. For removing mold from wood, you can first try detergent then try a diluted vinegar solution. You may also need to sand the wood after cleaning it.
- DIY Mold Cleaning Solution. You can create your own mold cleaning solution using some common household items. Undiluted white vinegar: used for hard surfaces in kitchens/baths. Bleach solution: one cup of bleach in a gallon of water. Don't rinse. Ammonia solution: 50/50 ammonia and water. Apply to surface and wait 2-3 hours and then rinse. Do not mix ammonia and bleach!
- Outdoor mold removal. Mix 1:10 bleach and water and spray on surfaces. Scrub with a brush for larger stains. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes then rinse off.
- Cleaning up. Dispose of the rags used to clean the mold and clean all clothes in hot water immediately after the cleanup.
If any of these mold removal techniques are unsuccessful or if the mold damage is on a larger scale, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park. We deal with all water-related damages including mold.
Preventative Measures for House Fires
12/17/2021 (Permalink)
Take preventative measures for home fires and educate others about the importance of fire safety. Regularly maintain smoke alarms.
An average of 358,000 homes have fires each year and more than 3,000 Americans die from fires per year. It is good to practice fire safety but even better to prevent house fires. The top three causes of house fires are cooking, heating equipment, and electrical appliances. Let's talk about preventative measures so you can ensure your family's optimal safety.
- Education Educate everyone in your household about fire safety. Since it is aforementioned that cooking is a number one cause of house fires, it is ideal to educate those around you on the safety of cooking such as never leaving the stove on or "stop, drop, and roll". You can also teach your family about fire safety at your local fire department.
- Smoke Alarms Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month and changing the batteries yearly. It's also ideal to replace the alarms themselves every ten years. There are smart detectors that connect to Wi-Fi and let you know when the alarm goes off or when it's time to change batteries.
- Keep flammable items in safe place You should keep flammable items contained in proper storage and stored away in an ideal temperature. Keep rubbing alcohol stored away from open flames and sparks and keep hairspray and aerosol cans away from heat and flames. Gasoline and paint thinner should not be stored inside your house. Keep cooking oil in a cool and dry place and do not leave on the stovetop while cooking. Keep flour in a safe place and never use it to put out a cooking fire since it is flammable in nature. Also keep nail polish stored in a cool dark place as it is flammable.
- Pets Keep pets in safe place so they don't damage your electrical appliances or expose stored flammables.
- Appliances and Wiring Make sure electrical appliances and wiring are in order. Make sure the central heating and air conditioner in your home is cleaned regularly. When burning wood in the fireplace, make sure to only use dried/seasoned wood and make sure it is cleaned regularly and use a screen to ensure embers don't fly out. Keep stove and oven clean and make sure grease is properly disposed of inside. Clean the lint trap of the drying machine regularly.
If you have any fire damage within your home, SERVPRO of Monterey Park can restore and replace anything damaged. We work directly with your insurance company and we understand the process from start to finish.
Is Your Mold Damage Covered By Homeowners Insurance?
12/16/2021 (Permalink)
Mold damage can be a headache for homeowners. It's important to know your coverage when it comes to mold damage so you know your protection.
Homeowners insurance protects you against certain types of water damage and coverage is usually dependent on source of the water and the homeowner's responsibility to maintain certain parts of the home. What about mold damage?
There isn't a clear answer because coverage and the amount of coverage is usually dependent on various factors. Mold can spawn from a number of sources and depending on the source and the action that was taken by the homeowner. Similar to water damage, mold coverage policies are similar in nature.
Resulting damage from a covered peril
Homeowners insurance will usually cover mold caused by "resulting damage" from a covered peril. If an appliance causes a water leak which leads to mold, then the mold damage would be covered. Mold caused by an bursting pipe would also be covered because the initial water damage from the bursting pipe would be covered and mold is the "resulting damage". Another example of "resulting damage" from a covered peril is firefighters extinguishing fires in your home and the remaining water has caused mold to grow. Since the initial fire was a covered peril, then the mold will most likely be covered as well.
Mold damage from disasters
Mold damage can occur from outside sources and homeowners insurance spells out a list of disasters covering resulting mold damage. The most common disaster associated with mold damage are floods and flash floods. Flood damage, is not usually covered through a regular homeowners insurance and a separate flood insurance must be bought. Homeowners insurance have an interesting policy of coverage from external water sources. If the external water source that enters the home is touching the ground, then it is not covered. This includes floods and sewage backups. This extends to mold damage and resulting damages from the listed events above. If you are in an area of frequent flooding, flood insurance might be good to invest in since you are covered for the resulting mold as well. For other disasters, however, you may be covered. If a hurricane or an ice storm tears openings in your home causing resulting mold, you are most likely covered by your homeowners insurance.
Mold damage from negligence
Mold damage that results from a failure of the homeowner to maintain an upkeep certain areas of the house will not be covered. This includes failure to fix leaking pipes, tubes, appliances, etc. For example, if you knowingly could have prevented the mold just by fixing a leaking pipe causing gradual water damage or knew that you had openings in your roof allowing water to come in to your home, you won't be covered for the resulting mold damage. If you were in a clear position to prevent mold from happening, you may be denied a claim.
It is important to know your coverage when it comes to mold. You can also take preventative measures to mitigate the probability of mold before the problem even starts. Here are some steps you can take:
- Maintain moisture levels, invest in a dehumidifier
- Regularly maintain plumbing, look for leaks in pipes
- Allow proper ventilation for rooms that might have a lot of moisture: bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room.
- Maintain proper upkeep of your roof
- Clean gutters to ensure rainwater is channeled properly
- Maintain proper temperatures near pipes
- Check whether or not appliances are in working order and not leaking
At SERVPRO, we work with your insurance company. We understand the process from start to finish and we can help restore and clean your home from mold damage and assist you through the claims process. If you have any questions on the claims process for mold damage or need mold repairs, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
How To Prepare Yourself For A Flood
12/15/2021 (Permalink)
Be sure to know the signs of a flood and have a comprehensive plan to evacuate in the event of flooding.
It is important to have an action plan during a flood. Floods are the leading causes of deaths in the United States compared to other weather events. It's important to know the signs when a flood is about to occur and how to prepare yourself for one; this includes how to situate yourself in your home or shelter in other places.
Flood Watch vs Flood Warning
A flood or flash flood watch is indicative of possible flood conditions. There is a likelihood that a flood may occur and it is important to be on the lookout for further updates on the weather condition. Be prepared to take shelter and move to higher ground.
A flood or flash flood warning indicates that a flood or flash flood is occurring or about to occur.
Being wary of a flood watch or flood warning is imperative and here are further steps to ensure the safety of your family in the event of a flood.
What to do Before a Flood
- Make sure you are constantly receiving updates: alerts, warnings, public safety information.
- Find out whether or not the area you are in is a high-risk flood area. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has flood maps that indicate areas with higher frequencies of flooding.
- Flooding usually occurs when water containment overflows or breaks; keep away from dams. Find out whether or not your home is downstream from a dam or not and if so take steps to evacuate in the early stages of flooding.
- Create an emergency plan for your family and be prepared to evacuate in the first signs of a flood. Have a plan to evacuate to higher ground. Consider investing in a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan in which we will outline a detailed action plan for a flood disaster.
- Create an emergency kit.
- Take records of your personal property. Take photos and videos of your belongings.
- Prepare your home for flooding
- Consider buying flood insurance since flooding damages are typically not covered through homeowners insurance. A typical flood insurance plan is the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP).
What to Do During a Flood Watch or Flash Flood Watch
- Listen to a weather radio NOAA or your local news station for further updates on weather conditions and flooding information
- Be prepared to move to high ground and postpone all other activities. Public safety officials will give information so be sure to be wary.
- Tie down objects that can be swept away during a flood; outdoor objects and unplug electrical appliances.
- Elevate items in a basement and be sure your sump pump is in working condition as it is responsible for pumping out the extra water in the basement.
- Avoid known bodies of water: rivers, creeks, lakes. These are hazardous areas and can flood very easily.
If you have any questions about flooding or need flood restoration and any other types of water damage, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
What To Do During A Flood Warning
12/15/2021 (Permalink)
"Turn around, don't drown" - Do not drive your car in flooded waters. If you car fills with water, take refuge on the top of your car.
A flood warning is indicative that a flood is imminent or a flood is occurring. There are certain actions and precautions you should take in order to ensure the utmost safety of everyone in your family and your home.
During the Flood Warning
- Move to higher ground immediately and listen for updates from public safety officials and flooding information from the media. Evacuate if told to do so.
- Take only essential items with you and pets if safe.
- "Turn around, don't drown" is a phrase to keep in mind. Do not drive through a flooded road; water levels above 2 feet. Cars can easily get swept away through rapidly moving water in only 2 feet deep of water levels. Also do not walk through flowing water as you can easily get swept away through rapidly flowing water.
- If you are stuck in a vehicle in rapidly moving water, stay in the vehicle and water gets into the vehicle, relocate to the top of the vehicle. Do not drive around barrier and blockades as they are blocked off for safety reasons.
- If you are currently sheltered, be sure listen in on weather updates and the signal to evacuate your home.
After The Flood
- Stay on top of emergency updates and follow instructions from public safety officials
- Return to your home only when instructed to so
- Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies; down powered lines and gas leaks. Call 2-1-1 to obtain important disaster information
- Check on family, friends, neighbors, and other peers.
- Stay away from downed wires.
- Remember "Turn around, don't drown".
- Stay out of damaged buildings and affected roads and areas.
- Report power outages.
- Careful where you step as there may be sharp objects and debris on the floor from the flood.
- Don't drink out of your water supply until it is confirmed safe by public safety officials and throw away all food that has been in contact with flood waters. Check on the quality of refrigerated foods.
- Check your home for damages. Have a restoration company check on your home for water damages and structural integrity and have electricians come check on electrical appliances and supplies. Do not do these actions yourself!
- Repair damaged septic tanks and leaching systems.
- Take evidence of water damaged goods and areas to document for insurance.
SERVPRO of Monterey Park can take care of flood affected and water damaged areas. After flooding you might have water damaged drywall and flooring. Water damaged carpeting and upholstered furniture may also need cleaning and restoring.
The Process of Mold Remediation
12/14/2021 (Permalink)
We have a carefully detailed mold removal process that removes mold and inhibits further growth.
SERVPRO of Monterey Park deals with mold damage on any scale from residential to commercial properties. Mold is usually associated with water damage and it is imperative to remove or at least treat mold because it can cause health hazards for you and your family. Let us introduce you to our mold remediation/removal process. We, IIRC certified experts, have a detailed and specific process when it comes to mold remediation and removal. Before we get into the process, we should explain mold and why specific steps in the process even exist.
Mold is microscopic in nature and is almost everywhere. Removing all instances of mold is almost near impossible. The best we can do is mitigate the growth and spread of mold. Mold can enter through openings in the building: windows, vents, doors, etc. Mold also thrives in the presence of moisture. Getting rid of a water source is one of the most crucial steps in dealing with mold. Mold also produces a very distinct scent; it can be described as musty and like a wet dog. Lastly, humidity above 45 percent can foster mold growth so it's important to keep it below 45 percent.
Mold Remediation Process
Our certified professionals have to adjust every step in the process to deal with certain mold situations but almost every step remains the same through any case of mold damage.
Step 1: Contact We get contacted and we get a description of the mold damage to prepare the necessary equipment and personnel.
Step 2: Inspection We inspect the building and get proof of the damage. we have specialized technology in identifying mold and determining sources of water that are fostering mold growth.
Step 3: Containment After inspection is done, we do our best to contain mold growth and this is done through limiting air flow into the building. We turn off all fans and anything that might produce airflow. We utilize a negative air chamber to isolate the mold damaged areas and this creates negative air pressure to prevent mold from spreading. We create physical barriers that separate and isolate the affected area. Sometimes, we use polyethylene sheeting to seal off the affected areas for higher level contamination.
Step 4: Air Filtration Since mold is microscopic it is can easily travel through the air and atmosphere. We have specialized equipment that filters microscopic mold particles from the air and these are called 'air scrubbers'. We also have HEPA vacuums that sucks up mold particles on surfaces for higher level contamination.
Step 5: Mold Cleaning and Removal If surface are porous, mold can seep through these pores and permanently affect these materials and in that case, we usually replace these materials. For non-porous materials and wood surfaces, we use a wire brush to clean all moldy surfaces and we wipe the surface with detergent solution and a wet cloth.
Step 6: Cleaning Mold-Infested Contents We also clean belongings affected by mold growth and this can include furniture, decorations, clothes, etc. We have separate cleaning processes for individual types of materials.
Step 7: Restoration Surfaces that are permanently affected by mold damage have to be replaced and in the event of a minor repair, we just replace certain areas of drywall, carpeting, and flooring. In more severe cases of mold damage, we have to reconstruct a room entirely.
If you have any mold damage, you can always call SERVPRO of Monterey Park for a free mold checkup. We deal with mold damage in commercial and residential properties of any scale.
Proper Disposal of Grease
12/13/2021 (Permalink)
Disposing of cooking oils down the drain can lead to damages your home and the municipal sewer system.
The worst type of water damage you would want is a sewage backup. That's because it is highly unsanitary and hazardous and also creates undesirable odors. In the event that you get a sewage backup, you can call SERVPRO of Monterey Park. But before you want to deal with any form of sewage backup, you can stop the problem before it even begins.
One of the common causes of sewage backups is the improper use of pipes especially in the kitchen. It is not uncommon that used cooking oils are disposed of in the kitchen sink. This might not seem problematic since oil seems to be a liquid that easily flows down the drain. However, when oil cools down, it solidifies creating blockage in the drain. Because of this, wastewater will fill your drains and pipes and will eventually lead to a sewage backup which will then flow into your home. Oil that does not get trapped in the pipe that it initially flows into can also spread to other parts of the home and neighboring homes through the sewer system. Also, when cooking oil makes it into the sewers it starts to collect trash and waste eventually creating a "fatberg". "Fatbergs" can be enormous in size and block sewers, causing sewage flooding in public areas.
The proper way to dispose of cooking oils is to contain it in a sealable plastic container and dispose of it through the trash. There are also used oil collection services that convert the oil to low carbon biodiesel.
Call SERVPRO of Monterey Park if you have a sewage backup in your home or any other types of water damage.
Water Damage Coverage by Your Insurance Company
12/13/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage caused by extreme weather conditions such as wind causing a tree to fall on top this house is generally covered by your insurance.
Understanding what type of water damage is covered by your insurance is important. That way, you can get a better of understanding of your expenses when dealing with water damage and be more conscious of preventative measures. In general, water damage coverage is determined by the amount of maintenance and upkeep in a home and whether or not the water damage was accidental or not. We’ll talk more about that later. First off, let’s introduce the different types of water damage.
Categories of Water Damage
Clean Water: This type of water damage is usually immediate and can result from a leaking pipe. It is usually low risk if dealt with on the spot. If the water is exposed for too long the water can become contaminated leading us to the second category of water damage.
Grey Water: Grey water is usually associated with water that is contaminated and its source is most often from leaking appliances such as dishwashers. This type of water usually contains chemicals such as dishwasher fluid and can pose risks for one’s family.
Black water: Black water is the most harmful type of water damage and is usually associated with the sewer water. This type of water usually contains oils, urine and toxic waste. The water can foster growth for bacteria, viruses, and allergens. Being exposed to black water can almost certainly affect an individual with an illness or an infection 90% of the time.
Water damage coverage by your insurance company
What is covered
As stated above, water damage coverage is usually determined by a matter of responsible upkeep and maintenance of your home and appliances. Negligence is largely factored into water damage coverage. If the water damage is sudden and completely accidental such as a bursting pipe, then it is most likely that the water damage will be covered. Water damage that occurs from water getting into your home from extreme weather conditions, such as a tree or ice dam falling on top of your home and leaving exposures will be covered by water damage. When water enters your home through a leaking roof, you may or may not be covered depending on how gradual the water damage was and maintenance of the roof.
What is not covered
One instance of damage that will not be covered is improper maintenance. For example, if you have water damage to your home while being aware of a leaking pipe and using tape as a fixture, then you will not be covered. There is also another weird concept when it comes to water damage coverage. Water damage where the source of water is external and has touched the ground will not be covered in your homeowner’s insurance. This can involve water damage from a sewage backup or rainwater that results in a flood. However, there are separate types of insurances for these situations.
What to do in the event of water damage
- When you first notice any instances of water damage, call your insurance company before attempting to make repairs. That way you have an estimate of your coverage before you start making any repairs.
- Gather as much proof as you can of any water damage in your home. This way you will have the most coverage you can possible and also is less problematic for the insurance company
- Gather water damaged valuables and belongings to provide as proof of water damage for further coverage.
- Call a cleanup and restoration vendor. Usually, your insurance company will refer you to a vendor but you can do your own research to find a reliable vendor such as SERVPRO of Monterey Park.
If you're seeking a reliable cleanup and restoration service, call SERVPRO of Monterey Park! We have certified professionals that deal with all sorts of water damage.

If you experience fire or smoke damage while cooking the Thanksgiving feast, call your local SERVPRO fire cleanup professionals!
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and there is nothing better than a deep-fried turkey during the holidays! Unfortunately, that also means a rise in house fires. It is estimated that 1000 house fires that occur during the holidays are related to turkey fryers. SERVPRO of Monterey Park would like to share a few things to be mindful of when preparing your Thanksgiving meal to keep yourself from having a house fire:
- Keep outdoor deep-fryers off decks, out of garages, and a safe distance from trees and buildings.
- Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking
- Place the fryer on a level surface
- Follow the manufacture instructions
- Never leave the fryer unattended.
- Turn the burner off before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
- Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
- Once finished, remove the pot from the burner; place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing of.
